Paradise on earth? Is there such a place?

Goa, situated in the western coastal belt of India, presents itself as closest to being one. To the critical eye, how does Goa measure up?

The Webster dictionary defines paradise as a place of extreme beauty and happiness. Goa indeed has the scenery that is out of the ordinary. The magnificence of its natural splendor - the blue waters of the Arabian Sea lapping on fabled shores, with the lush greenery of the of the Sahyadri mountain range serving as backdrop to the famous beaches - is really awe inspiring and never fail to send goose bumps to onlookers, one and all.

Another must see attraction are the ancient temples whose Indian architectural style depicts an era of outstanding creativity, artistry and craftsmanship dating back to the eighteenth century or beyond. You get transported back to the olden times when everything was done by hands - using tools crude by modern standards. You can't help whistle in admiration, awe and respect for the works of wonder the ancients turned out despite the seeming handicap.

The aura won't be complete without the people. Peaceful and friendly, ever welcoming friends and strangers alike, polite and mutually respectful of each other - traits that send good vibes and endearing to the new arrivals.

A flea market on a beach resort? Only in Goa India! Stalls that sells a huge selection of Indian artifacts, Indian jewelries, souvenirs, books and others - seem odd to some but add surprise even adventure and mystic to others - deemed added bonus that sits well with visitors.

Your Goa vacation isn't complete without partaking of Indian food? While first timers may find the food strange - too spicy of a different kind for most - but an exotic culinary experience worth trying nonetheless. If seafood is your predilection, you're in heaven in Goa. Its rivers and the sea yield a bountiful harvest of succulent fishes, lobsters, mollusks and other marine resources that will spike your food choice.

The blending of natural scenic beauty, history, culture, exotic food and amiable people complete the package that made Goa the popular tourist destination that it is today. Good enough to merit the coveted honor of being called a "paradise on earth"? I think Goa has earned it...
